The Central Florida Community College (CFCC) Life Legacy Project coordinates students pursuing the Associate of Science in Human Services. Students partner with The Salvation Army and Hospice of Marion County to plan and implement projects that will address the needs of seniors, while gaining firsthand knowledge of the aging process and its effects.
Interest in the project has increased student participation — from 23 students in Spring of 2007 to over 65 students in Fall 2007. Over 30 seniors participate each semester, and the number is growing. Faculty interest is growing as well.
Howard Middle School students are putting together a compilation video of the projects.
Highlights:
- Media plan including news releases by CFCC Marketing and Public Relations to promote service-learning activities
- Students conduct formal interviews with seniors to document the past
- Partnership with audio-visual students at Howard Middle School to produce oral history videos
- Activities such as gardening keeps seniors active and outdoors; multicultural discourse allows them to share their various histories and experiences

Quotes
- "We had a garden project for men, who are shown to have higher levels of alienation than women. It was really great to see a man with Alzheimer's, who never talked or interacted with anyone, gardening alongside everyone. I could tell he truly enjoyed it."
